Sometimes there’s an undoing that needs to take place in our lives. Perhaps what’s been done in our hearts and minds was laid down by foundations like family, church, education, and we’ve been influenced by relationships within those groups. Some of the foundation laid has been very good. Some has not.
God will often use tension within, external struggle, conflict, and even oppression or depression to reveal to us that we need to enter into this place of undoing. This can be a season of refinement which may require healing, confession and ultimately a call to surrender to our Lord’s hand in what he’s wanting to do in our lives. These times can be very difficult and messy. It’s scary, humbling and unnerving to go to a place where we’ve never been before, especially if we’re doing it alone. But to me, it is more harmful to stay where you’re at.
This undoing is necessary for our sanctification and it is often a part of our dying to self and becoming more like Christ. It’s a fiery time that reveals the condition of our faith in Christ and tests our trust in the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Don’t worry if faith and trust is what God is trying to strengthen.
This undoing can feel like you’re falling, and where you will land is unknown. It can feel lonely and isolating.
If God is taking you to a place where you’ve never been before, it will be well worth the journey. Do not fear that path unpaved. Do not fear the unknown if you are holding on to your God and Savior. Do not fear what it looks like to others or if you will appear strong enough in your faith. It may look like you’re breaking the mold while God is breaking the mold within you. Do not fear the pain that will result from this season. Do not fear…
Once you fully surrender to him drawing you in, our Heavenly Father will be with you, even if you do not feel his presence in the moment. He will comfort you. He will open your eyes if sin needs to be addressed; God will open your heart to parts that need healing. Let him in. Let him have every fiber of your heart. Let God love on you, pour into you as you pour out your heart at his throne of mercy and grace.
This season of undoing will restore back to you a hundred fold. Nothing will be lost but only that which should not be in your life in the first place. Joy will come, peace will rule, and a whole new abundance in Christ will be given to you after you’ve completely surrendered.
Asking God for wisdom, knowledge and understanding during this time is critical. Pursue it like gold and silver. Being in God’s word is necessary to stay the course in your journey. Seeking wise counsel is important. Surrounding yourself with those who have an understanding heart can help soothe your soul while you seek the ultimate Counselor of your faith.
Be encouraged that while your foundation might be temporarily shaken, it will grow stronger. You will soon walk on solid ground; know that your ground will be infused with God’s love, grace and truth.
Discouragement may come as you begin to walk the undoing, but don’t let the enemy of your soul keep you stuck in that spot you once were in. Get back up and start walking again. Walk in the truth God is teaching you. Walk in the healing and wholeness he’s lavished on you and in you. Walk in confidence in Christ and in Christ alone.
Keep in mind that this process of undoing will ultimately free you up to be more like Christ, and it will equip you to do the good work God desires for you for his glory, for your good and for the good of others.
A.W. Tozer in The Root of the Righteous, he writes in his chapter, “Praise God for the Furnace”:
“Strange as it may sound, it is yet true that much of the suffering we are called upon to endure on the high-way to holiness is an inward suffering for which scarcely an external cause can be found. For our journey is an inward journey, and our real foes are invisible to the eyes of men. Attacks of darkness, of despondency, of acute self-depreciation may be endured without any change in our outward circumstances. Only the enemy and God and the hard-pressed Christian know what has taken place. The inward suffering has been great and a mighty work of purification has been accomplished, but the heart knoweth its own sorrow and no one else can share it. God has cleansed His child in the only way He can, circumstances being what they are. Thank God for the furnace.”
He is a good God to take us through these times. As strange as this may sound, embrace it, lean into it, and know he will lead you out of this undoing into a freer and joy-filled place in Christ.

July 25, 2018 at 10:32 pmAbsolutely lovely! Well written and well understood!! Thank my dear one…who is blessed with these words and the Lords presence in your life!
This is especially meaningful tonight as I counseled a neighbor in distress and she needed a listening ear. Plus a faith filled response. I prayed with her for the healing presence of Jesus in her life. She is Iranian and does not believe in any religion. I have shared on many occasions my journey and how it was made more lovely and grace filled with Jesus/Gods presence in it and my acknowledgment of that presence. Blessings and love to you.

July 28, 2018 at 2:28 pmGod just gently dealt with me last week about fear as I step out in His will. We will be fostering starting in the fall, and as much as I have wanted to do it for years, as it gets closer, I’ve started to be afraid! God reminded me of the same fear I had when I was pregnant with my last and how He took away my fear when I entrusted Him with it.
