Every summer, our church goes all out for a week long kids camp. Many of us know it as VBS, or Vacation Bible School. It’s an all-hands type of event on campus. From the parking crew to the sanctuary decked out with the theme, help is needed to pull this week off.
I have always volunteered the years my kids attended, until this year. It’s my youngest’s last year before he ages out. There was a bit of guilt, but thankfully my guilt level, or FOMO, did not creep to a significant high. God was gracious to allow me to help those who were able to serve at the camp.
A blog post I read a few months ago came to mind this week that addressed this idea of helping the helper. It was a good reminder on how serving others may be different than what we desire or, in my case, what may be the usual way of helping, and it provides a fresh perspective on looking to help those who are directly helping in a capacity we may not be called to in that moment. It really is a beautiful picture of the body of Christ at work.
